What are the first challenges for a new Diplomatic Representation? And what are those for South Africa to the Holy See?

25 years ago Nelson Mandela and Pope Wojtyla started diplomatic relations. Today the newly established Embassy of South Africa to the Holy See commemorates that event celebrating its first National Day in Rome.

Exactly on May 22nd of 25 years ago, Nelson Mandela was elected President of the Democratic Republic of South Africa, putting an end to apartheid. Few days later, on June 30, 1994, the newly elected Mandela and Pope John Paul II signed the historic protocol agreement that formally started diplomatic relations between South Africa and the Holy See. Although it was an extremely complex transition, the urgency for South Africa to start diplomatic relations are a clear sign of the importance and value attributed to relations with the Vatican.

Other 24 years were necessary before it was possible to establish an Embassy dedicated to the Holy See, and South Africa appointed H. E. Mr. George Johannes to establish and start a new diplomatic representation.

After a year of hard work, on May 22nd, on the occasion of the establishment of the newly elected Parliament in Cape Town and the appointment of the new President Cyril Ramaphosa, H. E. Johannes celebrated his very first National Day in Rome, together with diplomats, ecclesiastics and numerous friends of South Africa.
