The holders of a driving licence issued by a State of the European Union may drive in Italy vehicles for which their licence is valid (class A, B, etc.), without having to convert the licence.
Even though for EU citizens this is voluntary, we advise you to request licence conversion or recognition of validity as this will facilitate renewal procedures if the licence is lost or stolen!
Conversion
In Italy conversion is allowed for the holders of a licence issued by States with which Italy has established reciprocity relations (as per circular nr. 4586/M340 of 02.11.2004).
To request either the recognition or conversion of the licence it is necessary to go to one of the Vehicle and driver licensing authority offices.
