Rome, 6th May 2016: After Pope John Paul II, Francis is the second Pope who receives the Karlspreis (Charlemagne Prize), a prestigious international prize awarded each year, since 1950, by the German city of Aachen for special merits in the work for integration, unity and peace in Europe.
The Prize has been awarded before the leaders of European Institutions. Among them, Jean Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, along with the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, and the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz.
“The projects of the founding fathers, heralds of peace and prophets of the future, are not outdated: today they still inspire the construction of bridges and the dismantling of walls”, said Pope Francis in his acknowledgment remarks.
The awards ceremony took place in the Vatican City. On the previous day, the three Presidents of the European institutions also took part in a round table on the situation of the European Union. The opening of the round table was led by the Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi.
